EU's Margrethe Vestager warns about Apple and Meta Platforms

EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager issued a warning to Apple and Meta Platforms on their new service fees, stating that they would prevent users from taking advantage of the advantages of the Digital Markets Act, which intends to provide them with more options.

App developers would be required to pay a core technology cost of 50 euro cents per user account annually under the new price structure, even if they choose not to utilise Apple’s payment systems. This has prompted criticism from competitors like Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite.

Vestager said the new fees have attracted her attention.

“There are things that we take a keen interest in, for instance, if the new Apple fee structure will de facto not make it in any way attractive to use the benefits of the DMA. That kind of thing is what we will be investigating,”

Austrian privacy campaigner Max Schrems stated that the problem is not with the amount of the charge, despite the company’s previous announcement on Tuesday that it has offered to nearly cut its monthly subscription fee for Facebook and Instagram to 5.99 euros from 9.99 euros. It appears that there are numerous avenues for generating revenue from the services that offered. Considering that one factor is the highly targeted advertising that is based on the data that is being used.
